The Janice A. Nowell Memorial Fund Awards These awards are to honor the memory of Jan Nowell, UCSC's first Electron Microscope Facility Coordinator. Awards, in the amount of up to $500, will be given to UCSC students both undergraduate and graduate, who utilize electron microscopy in their research. The award is unrestricted, but might be used, for example, for specialized electron microscopy supplies, EM beam time, or travel to scientific meetings to present EM research results. The number and amount of the awards may vary, depending on the income from the endowment funds. Jan Nowell was the coordinator of the UCSC Electron Microscope Facility from 1975 until her death in 1984. A native of England, Jan arrived in California in 1964. After working in the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis, she came to Santa Cruz to manage the newly consolidated Electron Microscope Facility. At Santa Cruz, she was an active researcher, teacher, and author who was known for her patience, grace, and humor. She was admired for her sincerity and frankness. She was dedicated to making electron microscopy accessible, as a research and teaching tool, to the entire community. Applicants for this award will be evaluated on the basis of the quality and originality of their proposal, and the incorporation of electron microscopy techniques. How to apply: Prepare your proposal according to the following guidelines: Write clearly and simply. Review your proposal with your advisor.
